Why Does API.Bible Return Grouped Verses?
If you've requested a single verse and received multiple verses in the response, this is expected behavior—not a bug. Some Bible translations define certain passages as a single verse span, and API.Bible returns the complete span provided by the source text.
A Little Background on Verse Numbers
The chapter and verse numbering system most readers are familiar with is a later development — early biblical manuscripts did not include it. Verse divisions were added over time to help readers locate passages, but not all Bible translations adopted these divisions uniformly.
While most translations follow familiar chapter and verse divisions, some licensed Bible texts define certain passages as a single verse span. API.Bible preserves this structure exactly as provided by the content publisher.
What Happens When You Request a Verse
When you call the API and request a specific verse from a translation that uses grouped spans, the API returns the entire span containing that verse — not just the single verse in isolation. This is by design: the translation treats those verses as a single literary unit, so the API delivers them that way.
API.Bible does not split or modify verse spans. It returns the content exactly as it is licensed and provided by the Bible publisher. For example, if verses 6–8 are stored as a single span, requesting verse 6, verse 7, or verse 8 will all return the same grouped text because those verses belong to one span in that translation.
What You Can Do
This behavior is specific to how a given translation is structured. You have a couple of options:
- Display the returned grouped passage as received rather than attempting to split it into individual verses.
- If your application requires one response per verse, consider using a translation that stores each verse separately.
Most translations return individual verses, so you may only encounter this behavior with specific Bible texts. This behavior is expected and reflects the structure of the licensed Bible text rather than an issue with the API itself.
