How to Create a New App
In API.Bible, an app is the container that holds your API key, your plan, and your Bible translation licenses. You need at least one app to start making API calls. You can create as many apps as you need from your dashboard — for example, one for development, one for staging, and one for production, or separate apps for separate products.
Before You Start
You'll need an API.Bible account before creating an app. If you don't have one yet, sign-up and choose either the Starter or Pro plan to get started.
Creating a New App
From your dashboard, navigate to your apps menu list on the upper left corner. Click on the V to the right of the current app name to open the drop down list, then click “Add New App” to create a new app.

Creating a new app consists of three steps:
Step 1 of 3 — Name Your App
- Enter your App Name — this is for your reference and can be changed later
- Select your Organization Type
- Select your Organization Location
- Set an Overage Budget to control your maximum spending on extra API calls. Set it to $0 to completely block overage charges
- Click Continue
Step 2 of 3 — Customize Your App
This step configures your licensing and Bible selections.
- Under Digital License Use,select whether your app is or will be used commercially (including ads, paid subscriptions, in-app purchases, or other revenue generation):
- Select Yes if your app is or will be commercial
- Select No, there will be no ads, paid subscriptions, in-app purchases or revenue if your app is non-commercial
- Note: the Starter (free) plan does not support commercial use. If you select Yes, you will be prompted to upgrade to a Pro plan
- Under End Users (Monthly), select your expected monthly user range (0–1K, 1K–5K, 5K–25K, or 25K–100K). For more than 100,000 users, contact support@api.bible
- Under Additional Bibles, select the Bible translations you want to add to your plan. Starter plan users can pick up to 3 copyrighted translations. Translations not available for your chosen license type will not appear as selectable options.
- Click Continue
Step 3 of 3 — Terms & Conditions
- Review and accept the Acceptable Use agreement
- Review and accept the Non-Commercial or Commercial Agreement depending on your selection in Step 2
- Review and accept the Statement of Orthodoxy
- Review and accept the Terms of Service
- Check the box confirming "I verify that I, the undersigned individual, agree and accept"
- Click Continue — for paid plans, you will be directed to complete payment via Stripe
Once the payment has completed, your new app will appear in your dashboard with its unique API key on the right side of that dashboard, ready to use.
Important: Keep your API key secure. Anyone with access to your key can make requests against your app's usage limits.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many apps can I create?
You can create as many apps as you need from your dashboard. Each app has its own API key, plan, and Bible translation licenses.
Can I change my app name or settings after creation?
Yes. You can update your app settings from your dashboard at any time.
Can I use the same API key across multiple apps?
No. Each app has its own unique API key. If you need to use the API in a different project or environment, create a separate app.
What if I need more than 150,000 monthly users?
Contact support@api.bible to discuss your requirements for a custom or enterprise plan.
What is overage protection?
Overage allows you to purchase additional API calls beyond your monthly allowance at $1 per 1,000 requests. Setting your overage budget to $0 prevents any additional charges. See the Overage Protection for more details.
