How Billing Works After Subscription Changes

When you make a change to your API.Bible subscription—whether upgrading or downgrading your plan, or adding or removing a Bible license—billing adjusts automatically. Some changes take effect immediately and are prorated, while others take effect at your next renewal date. This article explains how each type of change is handled.

Not All Changes Work the Same Way

How billing adjusts depends on the type of change you make.

  • Immediate (prorated): Plan upgrades and Bible license additions.
  • Next billing cycle: Plan downgrades and Bible license removals.

Upgrading Your Plan

When you upgrade to a higher plan, the change takes effect immediately so that your app can access the upgraded features and benefits. You are charged a prorated amount immediately based on the remaining time in your current billing cycle — so if you upgrade halfway through the month, you'll pay roughly half the price difference between your old and new plan. Your next full monthly charge will be at the new plan rate.

For example, your app was created on May 1 with the free Starter plan. Then on June 15, the app is upgraded to the paid Pro plan on June 15. On that day, you would be charged for about 50% of the Pro plan monthly subscription fee. Then when the next billing cycle begins on July 1, you will be charged the full Pro plan subscription fee.

Downgrading Your Plan

When you downgrade to a lower plan, your current plan remains active through the end of your billing cycle. The new lower plan takes effect at the start of your next billing cycle. You will not be charged a prorated difference — you simply pay the lower rate going forward from your next renewal date.

Adding a Bible License

New Bible licenses are added immediately and charged right away. You are billed a prorated amount for the remaining days in the current billing cycle, and the license is available to use as soon as the charge is confirmed.

Removing a Bible License

When you remove a Bible license, you retain access through the end of your current billing cycle. The license will not renew, so it will no longer appear on future invoices unless you add it again.

If a Payment Fails

If a payment attempt fails after a subscription change — for example, when upgrading to a higher plan — your app will show a Pending Payment status and API access will not be activated for the new plan until payment is confirmed.
